The other day in a Modern British History Class someone blurted out that she was shocked that Adam Smith taught Moral Philosophy. For some reason she found it ironic that the Father of Free Market Capitalism taught youth about morals.
Either she was ignorant or she was extremely brilliant. For I see no irony in Smith teaching morals to Scottish youth. I she nothing particularly humorous about it. Has someone taught this girl that capitalism was immoral and unethical? If her assumption is true than clearly socialism is the maven of all morality. Uncle Joe Stalin was a great guy, wasn't he? Such a model man in terms of morality. Mao, Castro, Tito all great men of principle and morals.
Truth be told, capitalism is amoral. It can foster freedom. It can lead to slavery. The system in and of it self is morally neutral. What people do with it can be morally upstanding or reprehensible.
